Gossiping: Part 2 “Why Do People Gossip.”
Some people gossip unintentionally but most times when people gossip it’s deliberate. Gossip can be unintentional or it can be deliberate. People gossip for many different reasons but before we even begin to discuss why people gossip, let’s talk about the originator of gossip.
So who is the originator of gossip you ask? Well it’s Satan himself. Satan started gossip. So when we gossip, Jesus tells us we are not children of God but children of Satan. John 8:44 says, For you are the children of your father the devil, and you love to do the evil things he does. He was a murderer from the beginning. He has always hated the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the father of lies.”
So when we gossip and spread rumors and lies, our behaviors and actions are consistent with the devil and we don’t want to be instruments for the enemy! So quit letting the devil whisper in your ear.
So now that we know who the true source of gossip is, why do people gossip? Some people gossip just to pass time. And the bible speaks about that. We all know idleness is the devil’s workshop and idleness breeds gossip. People with too much time on their hands might be idle in their hands but they are quite active with their mouths. Paul talks about these type of gossipers in 1 Timothy 5:13, "Besides, they get into the habit of being idle and going about from house to house. And not only do they become idlers, but also gossips and busybodies, saying things they ought not to".
Others gossip because they have low self-esteem or insecurities about themselves. Gossipers love to talk about other people’s flaws and problems. It gives them a temporary escape and relief from their own flaws and problems. One of the most common reasons people gossip is jealousy. Most gossipers are usually jealous of the person or people they are gossiping about. James 4:11 tells us, “Brothers, do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against his brother or judges him speaks against the law and judges it. When you judge the law, you are not keeping it, but sitting in judgment on it..”
God is simply telling us don’t speak negatively or badly about our fellow brothers and sisters. We shouldn’t put our mouths on their problems or situations. So when we gossip about others we are not obeying God’s law. And we don’t want to disobey God’s law.
Today I encourage you to recognize Satan is the true author of lies and gossip. So remember when you engage in gossip, you are helping Satan further his agenda. So instead of gossiping about people, speak to help build up and edify others…and further God’s agenda.
Today’s Scripture: "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen." Ephesians 4:29
