For the Love of Money
As the O’Jays sung it best, “Money money money money, money ….Some people got to have it ….Hey, Hey, Hey - some people really need it.” And they are right, we all need money. And there is nothing wrong with wanting money or having money. But there is a problem with loving money.
The Word tells us in 1 Timothy 6:10, “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs." The love of money will cause people to commit all kinds of sin. People will steal, kill, lie, and fornicate for the love money. Sadly, some people will even sell their souls. And Mark 8:36, tells us, “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul.”
People who love money and consistently seek it will never be satisfied. Ecclesiastes 5:10 says, “Whoever loves money never has enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income. This too is meaningless.” A millionaire, who has a love for money, will never be satisfied with his millions. He or she will harder to earn more. But even with the increase of money-they are not happy. As the scripture says, it is meaningless.
Money comes and it goes. We as Christians are never to get fixated on money. There is wise proverb that says never become a slave to money, but make money serve you, and by faith tell it where to go. Proverbs 23:4-5 says, “Do not wear yourself out to get rich; have the wisdom to show restraint. Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone, for they will surely sprout wings and fly off to the sky like an eagle.” Money has a purpose to serve and once its purpose has been served it will be gone. So don’t get to attach to money, for it will surely leave you!
Lovers of money think they can buy themselves into heaven or that everything problem can be fixed or go away with money. But we who know the Word know that money is worthless and meaningless to God. Proverbs 11:4 says, “Wealth is worthless in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death.” Money can’t save you from death. It can’t save in you in the day of destruction.
Matter of fact, the love of money will cause you death and destruction. Proverbs 11:28 says, “He who trusts in his riches will fall, but the righteous shall flourish as the green leaf.”
Now that we know that that love of money is the root of all evil, we are told in 1Timothy 6:17 to “instruct those who are rich in this present world not to be conceited or to fix their hope on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly supplies us with all things to enjoy.”
We as Christians should teach others not to get fixated on money but depend on God because we know in Philippians 4:19, “God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.”
Today I encourage you to treat money as a resource given to you by your source-God. Never fall in love with money. Though there is nothing wrong with wanting it or working to obtain it, realize it will come and it will go.
Today’s Scripture: "Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” Hebrews 13:5
